I was invited by Kenneth Alme to write a piece for the group show Connected by the Hand at Henie Onstad Kunstsenter. My intention was to write something linked to my personal life, a fictional piece that derived from first-hand experience, but I couldn’t come up with anything that I really liked. I felt like my “role” as curator and writer (the only one among the invited guests, all artists) was a weakness instead of a strength.

I dropped the idea of writing a piece and focussed on the meaning the figure of the curator has in our professional field. What could I contribute with, given that I am not “connected by the hand” as all artists eventually are? Was there any aspect of my “role” that I could turn in my favour in this situation?

The result of this self-reflection is Palm Reading for Artists.

The piece is comprised of two parts: a textual one and an interactive one. The text is in the form of a flyer where I advertise my ability as a curator to read artists’ palms and invite artists visiting the exhibition to send me a photo of their palms through WhatsApp.
As soon as an artist would send me her/his photo, I would analyse her/his palm through a set of guidelines found on WikiHow and send my reading back via WhatsApp.
