Internet can be represented as an iceberg: its tip is the “Surface Web”, i.e. that digital territory we all know and that we surf on a daily basis. The underwater part, amounting to more than 90% of the iceberg, represents the “Deep Web”: a large encrypted network that escapes search engines and where total anonymity is guaranteed. Accessible only through specific softwares, here virtually no action can be traced.
Out of the maze of this non-place, what emerges is a complex, structured online business of mostly illegal materials which follows the rules of traditional marketing: almost all the thousands of published ads come with photographs, in the vendors’ attempt to capture the visitors’ attention and make their own styles recognizable. Likely shot by the vendors themselves, the selected images are unedited, anonymous, often exotic and surreal. Intended to self-erase once their function is exhausted, these pictures cannot be found in the traditional web: they only exist temporarily in the Deep Web.
In the Installation The Iceberg, these photographs are represented as invisible objects: printed with special inks, they can be revealed and shown only under ultraviolet lights. It is the same light used to search for traces of certain kinds of drug; in this case, it is necessary to reveal a representation of drugs themselves. The visitors are asked to navigate through a dark room and explore the depths of this submerged and temporary anti-archive by using a UV torch provided at the entrance. At regular intervals, a white light illuminates the space that appears as blank, with the exception of a few prints: also representing drug offers, these photographs are of public domain too. In the Deep Web, they acquire a different meaning and represent a junction point between the two worlds.
Giorgio Di Noto was born in Rome in 1990. He studied Photography at the A. Adams Centro Sperimentale di Fotografia in Rome and learnt darkroom techniques by working together with professional printers. In 2011 he started a research on photographic materials and languages, focusing on the relationship between technical processes and imaging content. He took part to the Reflexion Masterclass and to the Joop Swart Masterclass (World Press Photo), where he enhanced and developed interactive projects by experimenting with different printing procedures. In 2012 he won the Pesaresi Prize, and in 2013 he was a finalist in the Call for Entry at the International Photography Festival of Rome. His limited-edition book The Arab Revolt was included in The Photobook. A History. Vol. III by Martin Parr and Gerry Badger. He is currently attending Philosophy studies at La Sapienza University in Rome, where he lives and works.

Internet può essere rappresentato come un iceberg: la punta raffigura il “Surface Web”, ovvero quel territorio digitale che tutti noi conosciamo e dove navighiamo quotidianamente; la parte sommersa dell’iceberg, pari a più del suo 90%, rappresenta invece il “Deep Web”: un vastissimo network criptato che sfugge ai motori di ricerca e in cui vige la totale anonimità. Uno spazio accessibile solo attraverso specifici software, dove praticamente nessuna azione è tracciabile.
Nei meandri di questo non-luogo, emerge un complesso e strutturato business online di materiale per lo più illegale che segue le tradizionali regole di marketing: quasi tutte le migliaia di inserzioni pubblicate sono accompagnate da fotografie, nel tentativo di catturare l’attenzione del visitatore e rendere riconoscibile il proprio stile. Probabilmente scattate dagli stessi venditori, le immagini selezionate sono inedite e anonime e dal carattere spesso esotico e surreale. Destinate ad autocancellarsi esaurita la loro funzione, non sono rintracciabili nel web tradizionale, ma vivono solo temporaneamente nel Deep Web.
Nell’installazione di The Iceberg, queste fotografie vengono presentate come oggetti invisibili: stampate con degli inchiostri speciali, possono essere rivelate e fatte apparire solo attraverso una luce ultravioletta. La stessa luce spesso impiegata per cercare tracce di droga, in questo caso è necessaria per rivelare una rappresentazione della droga stessa. Al visitatore verrà infatti chiesto di navigare in una stanza buia ed esplorare le profondità di questo anti-archivio sommerso e temporaneo attraverso una torcia UV fornita all’ingresso. Ad intervalli regolari una luce bianca illuminerà lo spazio che risulterà apparentemente vuoto, ad eccezione di alcune stampe: anch’esse utilizzate per illustrare inserzioni di droga, sono però immagini di pubblico dominio che nel Deep Web assumono un diverso significato e rappresentano un punto di congiunzione tra i due mondi.
Giorgio Di Noto, nato a Roma nel 1990, ha studiato fotografia al Centro Sperimentale di Fotografia A. Adams e ha imparato le tecniche di camera oscura lavorando con stampatori professionisti in Italia. Nel 2011 inizia una ricerca sui materiali e i linguaggi fotografici concentrandosi sul rapporto tra processo tecnico e contenuto delle immagini. Prosegue la formazione partecipando al Reflexion Masterclass e al Joop Swart Masterclass (World Press Photo) dove approfondisce e sviluppa progetti interattivi attraverso la sperimentazione di diversi procedimenti di stampa. Nel 2012 vince il Premio Pesaresi, nel 2013 è finalista alla Call for Entry del Festival Internazionale Fotografia di Roma. Con il libro in edizione limitata The Arab Revolt è menzionato in “The Photobook. A History. Vol. III” di Martin Parr e Gerry Badger. Studia Filosofia all’Università La Sapienza, vive e lavora a Roma.
